THE RETURN OF ANTEPRIMA DELLA COSTA TOSCANA
SPECIAL EVENT: A CELEBRATION OF SASSICAIA, 50 YEARS OF THE FATHER OF THE TUSCAN COAST
Promising another exciting weekend exploring scents and flavours of the Tuscan Coast, Lucca will again host the “anteprima” or tasting of winemakers from the provinces of the Costa Toscana, where the proximity to the sea has a noticeable effect on the regions winemaking. The wine producers will personally present their wines: over 600 wines will tell the complex story of Tuscan wine production and will offer the chance to hear the personal stories of men and women who believe that the coastal territory has a terroir that can create great wines.
The first floor of the prestigious Real Collegio will host producers from across the provinces of the Costa Toscana from Massa Carrara to Grosseto, Lucca, Pisa and Livorno. Guests will find not only the most famous labels of Tuscany known throughout the world but also young companies with a focus on authenticity and place in their wines. There will be a chance to explore the themes of organic and biodynamic winemaking and hear directly from the winemakers why they have gone down this path.
One of the highlights of the 2018 edition is a tribute to what many call the “father” of the Tuscan coast, Sassicaia. There will be a once in a lifetime chance to experience a vertical tasting which will explore wines from each of the five decades (1968-2018) of a wine that has become for the world a myth and a reference of elegance. This wine is the jewel in the crown of the splendid Tenuta San Guido, in Bolgheri, which owned by Nicolò Incisa della Rocchetta, honorary president of the Associazione Grandi Cru of the Tuscan Coast.
Traditionally, Anteprima invites each year international guest winemakers from a particular region or country. The 2018 edition will present a selection of Hungarian winemakers carefully selected by Tibor Gal, the son of the great and celebrated winemaker of the same name who gifted the world with Ornellaia wines. His son is also an oenologist and producer in his own right and will be bring some exciting producers with him to Anteprima to show off the wines of his homeland.
This year in addition to the international presence of Hungary, Anteprima will also be exploring the wines of its neighbours in Tuscany with a salon dedicated to the “Other Tuscany”. This will offer guests an opportunity to explore the inland provinces of Tuscany including the historic Chianti territories of the Aretine, Sienese and Florentine hills; the prestigious Brunelli di Montalcino; and the exclusive Nobile di Montepulciano. “Other Tuscany” will also be showcasing the small and new denominations of this region to discover new trends and developments in a region known for its red wine. A Master Class will be held to take advantage of the “Other Tuscany” wine producers: “Selvapiana- The history of Chianti Rufina “. It will include wines starting from 1965 and will develop into a rich vertical tasting of Bucerchiale from the first vintage, 1979, to the present day.
In addition to the two vertical masterclasses mentioned above, there will be a variety of other wine labs including “Etna. The red of the volcano”, a horizontal of Nerello from the 2014 harvest, which although a difficult year for the Italian peninsula, was an extraordinary vintage for Sicily. In addition to a chance to taste wines from Sicily in the south there will be a chance to try the wines of the north with the wine lab, “Nebbiolo The King”, a grape made famous by the wines of made in Barolo, Barbaresco, Valtellina, and Lessona.
Journalists and people from the trade will be invited to explore, in a reserved space, the samples from the barrels of the vintage 2017 to develop a shared reflection on what the most recent harvest has in store for the wines of the Tuscan Coast.
Il Giardino di Anteprima is new for 2018 and will offer visitors the chance to taste the gastronomical delights of Tuscany in a refined and relaxing setting, where they can accompany their food with a selection of region’s wines.
Guests will not be limited to just tasting wines, but will also have the chance in the wine shop to buy wines from the various producers to take home. Additionally, the wine shop will offer some special reserve and hard to find bottles to allow guests to add something special to their collection.
There will also be the chance to explore Tuscany’s long tradition of producing the “toscano” or the Tuscan cigar. Over the weekend there will be a number of laboratories where guests can learn more and see how they pair with wines and liqueurs from the region.
As in the past, Anteprima will be partnering in 2018 with the partnership the Lucca Classica Music Festival, the prestigious music festival produced by the Lucca Music Association. This means that visitors to Lucca will not only be able to explore the world of wine but will also be able to take part in the musical events, discussions, performances, and collaborations between music and wine throughout the city.
This year Anteprima is proud to announce a new and unique partnership with the Order of Architects of Lucca. A professional and accredited programme for architects that explores the Tuscan wine landscape through a series of dedicated meetings that culminates in the Biodynamic Congress on May 4, on the eve of the official opening of Anteprima at the Royal College of Lucca.
